Christmas might be a time for happiness, family gatherings and joyous giving, but it’s also a time when we see some serious risks for aggressive driving-related accidents. According to The Washington Post, a third of polled drivers say that they’re a bit more aggressive behind the wheel once holiday stress sets in. Recent studies indicate that traffic accidents skyrocket during the final days before Christmas.

Aggressive driving is not just a holiday problem. The Washington Post study concluded 20 percent of drivers feel occasional aggression behind the wheel year round. Close to 70 percent say that they often see other drivers showing uncontrolled anger toward someone else.

Our personal injury attorneys in Broward understand the risk is heightened through the busy holiday season, as snowbirds head south for the winter and the tourists begin to arrive. Combine with the pressure of the holidays, the gifts, the family visits and our stress levels are bound to rise. We’ve also got the problem of distracted drivers, which haunts everyone out there, including motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. During the end of December, it’s more important than ever that we’re calm and collected behind the wheel — let’s show a little compassion for our fellow travelers.

Florida leads the nation with more than 17 percent of its population 65-years-old and older. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV), that’s a number that’s going to continue growing.

At some point in all of our lives, it’s going to be the best decision to give up the keys — for our own safety and for the safety of other travelers. This is especially important during the winter months when we see an abundance of snowbirds returning to the area.

Our Hollywood car accident attorneys know Florida’s Older Driver Safety Awareness week kicks of awareness efforts. This week-long campaign is used statewide to help to make sure that seniors continue to enjoy their freedom, but do so in a safe manner.

Family gatherings, office parties, and friendly seasonal get-togethers are a time to celebrate the holidays. Commonly, these events include consumption of alcohol, including champagne, beer, wine, and spirits. While relaxing with a few drinks at a party is common during the holidays, all drivers need to be aware of the dangers of drunk driving. Even if you would never get behind the wheel after drinking, also be aware that the holidays increase the risk of drunk drivers using Florida’s roadways.

Every year, drunk drivers cause thousands of accidents, injuries and deaths. The risks of these accidents spikes from Thanksgiving through the New Year. The dangers of drunk driving are well-known; however, the threat of intoxicated drivers continues to plague our roads. Our Fort Lauderdale drunk driving accident attorneys are experienced with investigating drunk driving accidents and pursuing claims against liable parties. We will take a comprehensive approach to identify all responsible individuals and entities including drunk drivers, bar tenders, organizations, and companies that may have over-served their employees at an event. We have discussed the possibilities of self-driving cars in previous posts: cars that swerve to avoid accidents, the use high-tech sensors to detect dangers before you could, and hyper-advanced systems that could get you from A to B without touching the wheel. What happens though when something goes wrong? How will we hold drivers accountable when we are dependent on this technology to prevent accidents? How will laws and regulations have to keep up to ensure that drivers are still held accountable?

Advancements in vehicle technology have proven to keep consumers and other motorists on the road safe. While most drivers are interested in advancements that can make roads safer, no one would be interested in technology that lets drivers off the hook. Our Fort Lauderdale car accident attorneys are dedicated to keeping Florida motorists safe. We are abreast of developments in vehicle safety and want to shed light on the potential problems that could arise with self-driving cars in the event of an accident or injury.

When you think of impaired driving, you most likely think of drinking and driving. But there’s another form of impaired driving that’s wreaking havoc on our Florida roadways.

We’re talking about smoking and driving — marijuana.

According to NBC NEWS, there’s a growing number of high school seniors who are getting behind the wheel after smoking pot, or they’re getting in the vehicle with a driver who has been smoking. Researchers say that these findings reflect the misconceptions about the dangers of marijuana.

Our Fort Pierce car accident lawyers understand that teenage drivers are at higher risks for an accident even when sober. Those risks skyrocket when you throw in mind-altering substances like alcohol or marijuana. But the teens just don’t seem to understand the risks, with their “accidents won’t happen to me” mindsets. And we need to change that.

Four people were injured after they were ejected from their car in a rollover crash on Southern Boulevard and Haverhill in Suburban West Palm Beach. According to News Channel 5, the four were taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center. Two children sustained traumatic injuries.

According to Captain Borroto, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesman, the accident happened just after 5:30 p.m.

Our West Palm Beach car accident lawyers understand that rollover accidents are more prominent among SUVs, minivans and trucks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that there are close to 300,000 rollover accidents reported each and every year. These accidents take the lives of about 10,000 annually. Rollover accidents are directly related to a vehicle’s stability in turns. That stability is influenced by the relationship between the center of gravity and the track width (distance between the left and right wheels).

Car accidents continue to be the number one cause of death for children under the age of 13. Oftentimes fatalities and injuries can be prevented if parents and caregivers properly use car seats, booster seats and seat belts. For the entire week, September 15th to 21st, officials around the country will be promoting Child Passenger Safety Week, according to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). This week-long enforcement effort is to help educate parents and guardians about the importance of properly buckling in young passengers. It’s a move that can save lives.

According to Consumer Reports, about 75 percent of parents and caregivers don’t properly use child restraints. The truth of the matter is that child safety seats reduce the risks of death by more than 70 percent for infants and close to 60 percent for children under the age of 4.

Our Boynton Beach car accident lawyers understand that properly used child restraints saved more than 260 child lives (under the age of 5) in the U.S. in 2011. Experts say you need to make sure you buy the right size car seat for your child. Do you know the right seat for your child?

Officials with the Allstate Insurance Company recently released the ninth annual “Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report.” This report showcases the nation’s 200 largest cities and ranks them according to the safest — and most dangerous — drivers.

For the third time in the history of the report, Fort Collins, Colorado has been ranked as “America’s Safest Driving City.” Fort Collins has been ranked in the top 10 for safety every year since the report launched.

Our Fort Lauderdale car accident lawyers understand that the South Florida region didn’t do that well in this new report. Fort Lauderdale came in 148 out of 200. We actually dropped a spot from the previous year. According to the study, drivers in the area can expect about 8 years between accidents. That might sound like good news, but consider this: Fort Lauderdale drivers are about 25 percent more likely to get into an accident than the national average.

You might think our days are getting shorter. We continuously try to cram everything into one day and oftentimes wear ourselves down in the process. Students are spending their waking hours in class, in the library and studying. Adults are spending their days working, caring for children and maintaining a household.

Autumn’s early darkness compounds the risks. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV), drowsy driving accidents cause roughly 1,500 fatalities and another 71,000 injuries each year. Just like drunk driving, drowsiness affects your abilities to make responsible decisions behind the wheel and navigate our roadways safely.

Our Pembroke Pines injury lawyers understand that many drivers think that they can fight through the symptoms of drowsiness behind the wheel. And there’s nothing that could be more dangerous. That’s why the first week of September has been designated as “Drowsy Driving Prevention Week.” According to the National Sleep Foundation’s Sleep in America poll, well over half of Americans say that they’ve driven while feeling sleepy, and more than 35 percent admit to actually having fallen asleep at the wheel within the last year.
