It’s Halloween, and that means more than haunted houses and sweet treats. It means some serious risks for pedestrian accidents. As a matter of fact, Halloween is the most dangerous night of the year for pedestrian accidents, especially among young children. According to a recent study, and a look over at more than four million records in the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) from 1990 – 2010 for children 0-18 years of age on October 31, it was concluded that there have been 115 child pedestrian fatalities through the 21 years of analysis. That’s an average of close to 6 fatalities on the haunted night each and every year — compared to the average of about 2.6 on every other night of the year.

The deadliest hours for trick-or-treaters were from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. About 60 percent of all of the child pedestrian fatalities on Halloween night occurred during this time. About 70 percent of them happened at areas away from a crosswalk or an intersection and they were most likely to happen among children between the ages of 12 and 15, according to StateFarm.

Our Fort Lauderdale pedestrian accident lawyers understand that Halloween is supposed to be a fun, lighthearted night for our youngster, but it’s our responsibility to make sure that this is all good, safe fun. We advise parents to take advantage of local businesses and downtown activities for trick-or-treating, but if you’re set on hitting the neighborhoods, please review and follow these safety tips:

When you think of impaired driving, you most likely think of drinking and driving. But there’s another form of impaired driving that’s wreaking havoc on our Florida roadways.

We’re talking about smoking and driving — marijuana.

According to NBC NEWS, there’s a growing number of high school seniors who are getting behind the wheel after smoking pot, or they’re getting in the vehicle with a driver who has been smoking. Researchers say that these findings reflect the misconceptions about the dangers of marijuana.

Our Fort Pierce car accident lawyers understand that teenage drivers are at higher risks for an accident even when sober. Those risks skyrocket when you throw in mind-altering substances like alcohol or marijuana. But the teens just don’t seem to understand the risks, with their “accidents won’t happen to me” mindsets. And we need to change that.

Four people were injured after they were ejected from their car in a rollover crash on Southern Boulevard and Haverhill in Suburban West Palm Beach. According to News Channel 5, the four were taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center. Two children sustained traumatic injuries.

According to Captain Borroto, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesman, the accident happened just after 5:30 p.m.

Our West Palm Beach car accident lawyers understand that rollover accidents are more prominent among SUVs, minivans and trucks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that there are close to 300,000 rollover accidents reported each and every year. These accidents take the lives of about 10,000 annually. Rollover accidents are directly related to a vehicle’s stability in turns. That stability is influenced by the relationship between the center of gravity and the track width (distance between the left and right wheels).

Close to 40 percent of the children who were killed in passenger-vehicle accidents in the U.S. in 2011 were not in car seats or were not wearing a seat belt. And that why officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are stepping up and asking parents and guardians to protect their most vulnerable motorists. It’s all wrapped up in Child Passenger Safety Week.

The purpose of this week-long safety effort is to help raise awareness and knowledge in parents and guardians about the proper use of booster seats, child car seats and seat belts for young passengers.

Our Miramar personal injury attorneys understand that car accidents continue to be the number one killer of children across the country. In 2011, there were about 2 children under the age of 13 who died and another 340 who were injured each and every day while riding in a passenger vehicle.

With slick roadways and an early-morning haze, a passenger vehicle lost control on Interstate 95 in Lake Worth and slammed into a tractor-trailer parked alongside the road. According to The Palm Beach Post, the driver of the tractor-trailer was on the side of the road checking on a previous accident. Upon collision, the 68-year-old passenger car driver from Boynton Beach was killed. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the older driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident, but it wasn’t enough to save his life.

Our Lake Worth accident lawyers understand that this accident happened during the early-morning hours in rainy weather conditions. Unfortunately, low-light conditions and weather can have a serious impact on our safety behind the wheel. Remember that speed limits are for optimal driving conditions. You are responsible for adjusting your driving speed to the current road and weather conditions. For example, if the weather is bad or there is a lot of traffic, it’s recommended that you drive slower than the posted speed. The safe speed is the one that allows you to have complete control of your vehicle.

Remember that in the state of Florida, it is law that you turn on your headlights during inclement weather. The safety consideration of driving with headlights on is nothing new. Motorcycles are required to have a headlight on all the time, even in clear daylight. In addition, a number of new cars and trucks are factory equipped with daytime running lights – low-beam headlights that automatically come on when the vehicle is started, day or night.

Car accidents continue to be the number one cause of death for children under the age of 13. Oftentimes fatalities and injuries can be prevented if parents and caregivers properly use car seats, booster seats and seat belts. For the entire week, September 15th to 21st, officials around the country will be promoting Child Passenger Safety Week, according to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). This week-long enforcement effort is to help educate parents and guardians about the importance of properly buckling in young passengers. It’s a move that can save lives.

According to Consumer Reports, about 75 percent of parents and caregivers don’t properly use child restraints. The truth of the matter is that child safety seats reduce the risks of death by more than 70 percent for infants and close to 60 percent for children under the age of 4.

Our Boynton Beach car accident lawyers understand that properly used child restraints saved more than 260 child lives (under the age of 5) in the U.S. in 2011. Experts say you need to make sure you buy the right size car seat for your child. Do you know the right seat for your child?

Officials with the Allstate Insurance Company recently released the ninth annual “Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report.” This report showcases the nation’s 200 largest cities and ranks them according to the safest — and most dangerous — drivers.

For the third time in the history of the report, Fort Collins, Colorado has been ranked as “America’s Safest Driving City.” Fort Collins has been ranked in the top 10 for safety every year since the report launched.

Our Fort Lauderdale car accident lawyers understand that the South Florida region didn’t do that well in this new report. Fort Lauderdale came in 148 out of 200. We actually dropped a spot from the previous year. According to the study, drivers in the area can expect about 8 years between accidents. That might sound like good news, but consider this: Fort Lauderdale drivers are about 25 percent more likely to get into an accident than the national average.

You might think our days are getting shorter. We continuously try to cram everything into one day and oftentimes wear ourselves down in the process. Students are spending their waking hours in class, in the library and studying. Adults are spending their days working, caring for children and maintaining a household.

Autumn’s early darkness compounds the risks. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV), drowsy driving accidents cause roughly 1,500 fatalities and another 71,000 injuries each year. Just like drunk driving, drowsiness affects your abilities to make responsible decisions behind the wheel and navigate our roadways safely.

Our Pembroke Pines injury lawyers understand that many drivers think that they can fight through the symptoms of drowsiness behind the wheel. And there’s nothing that could be more dangerous. That’s why the first week of September has been designated as “Drowsy Driving Prevention Week.” According to the National Sleep Foundation’s Sleep in America poll, well over half of Americans say that they’ve driven while feeling sleepy, and more than 35 percent admit to actually having fallen asleep at the wheel within the last year.

Every teen has a desire to be cool, to succeed and to fit in. It’s important that we remind our teens that alcohol isn’t an option for any of these ventures. Unfortunately, with school back in session, our teens can be subjected to peer pressure and to teenage trends.

With every birthday, our teens are flirting with adulthood and want to act like it. With later curfew and more lenient rules, they have more freedom, and more opportunity to make dangerous choices.

Officials with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) are addressing the issue as autumn begins. MADD is urging parents and caregivers to step in and to talk with teenagers today about the risks and the dangers involved with underage drinking.

Our Stuart personal injury lawyers understand that parents are some of the most influential people in a teen’s life. It may not seem like you’re getting through, but you’d be surprised by how much your word and your concern means to them. Your talk and your involvement in a teen’s life can help them make safe and responsible decisions that might one day end up saving their life. Consider these tips on how to get the conversation started, provided to us by MADD:

Before you pack up the car and the family for your Labor Day holiday weekend venture, make sure you review roadway safety tips — and that includes keeping an eye on your speed as your pushing to reach your destination.

This year, officials with the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) will be out on our roadways during the long weekend and looking to crackdown on speeders, according to WCTV. As always, officers throughout the state will be on the hunt for drunk drivers, as we see a significant increase in intoxicated motorists during long weekends and holiday periods.

Speeding, aggressive drivers and tempers will also increase the risks. Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant Ryan Martina says he understands that emotions can flare behind the wheel, but officers are ready to address the problem to reduce the risks for everyone on the road.

“It’s all about safety. It’s not about revenue or anything like that,” said Martina.

Our Fort Lauderdale car accident lawyers understand that officers will be targeting Interstate 10 as part of their enforcement efforts. It’s all a part of a new multi-state initiative meant to keep motorists safe during the hectic travel weekend. Across the state of Florida, the number of fatal car accidents during summer holiday weekends is down from 2012, but the overall number of crashes is up. This increased patrolling effort kicks off on the 29th and continues through the Labor Day weekend.
